Georgie Jessup

Georgie Jessup is a three time WAMMIE nominated singer songwriter, a 2004
INDIAN SUMMER MUSIC AWARD’S nominee, and musician of extraordinary passion.
S/he has an equally extraordinary ability to encourage audiences to look
deeply into their prejudices and other transgressions. Consequently,
audiences tend to respond emotionally, if not always lovingly. Georgie has
developed a successful career by challenging musical styles, personal
identifications, and storybook history lessons. S/he has released three CD's
AMERICAN HOLOCAUST, SWEET GRASS SMOKE, and WINKTE & CRAZY SACRED DOGS and is
working on hir fourth release with co-producer and engineer/musician, Billy
Kemp and his band Willbilly.
Austria’s own Big City Indian for their 2003 release Native Heart Urban Soul
recorded hir song, Red Cloud’s Room, from the Sweet Grass Smoke CD. Hir
songs have been covered by other songwriters including Throw Away The Lies,
that the president of the BSA, (Baltimore Songwriters Association), performs
at his shows.
Georgie's AMERICAN HOLOCAUST is a controversial CD. The title caused the
album to be banned at many radio stations before anyone listened to the
music. Those who listened heard carefully crafted songs illuminating the
dignity of all people, and they heard an artist pleading for the
preservation of a country founded on the principles of life, liberty, and
justice for all.
"Georgie sings from the heart, like a rare flower in a wilderness. She
speaks to us about the deepest issues. Issues that all of us should care
about, but so many of us pretend don't affect us. Georgie reminds us that we
are all related in our human condition and struggle. And Georgie reinforces
that we are all trapped by gender and physical being,and that the brightest
life and light we have is our soul."

Georgie Jessup first appeared on the scene in 1983 with the
R&B band Georgie Jessup and the Jewels. The Jewels won a signed
band contest that the Baltimore Sun sponsored and many celebrities
sat as the judges. RollingStone Magazine and then Baltimore Sun
music critic J.D. Considine was one of the judges who commented
that Georgie's songs were reminiscent of Sprinsteen's Sandy, (4th
of July)
Indeed Georgie has a strong powerful voice and like Springsteen,
writes songs that ring true. Georgie went on to front a local
R&B band which Music Monthly Magazine, (then Maryland Musician
Magazine), could not stoptalking about, called Wavelength. The
magazine even featured Georgie's picture in their ad for the first
All Star Jam. Wavelength and various members recorded nine Jessup
originals, before Jessup formed the Georgie Jessup Band in 1987.
One song, Your Demons, was selected for the 98ROCK Album Volume
IV. Wavelength went on to perform at many top area clubs and TV
programs.
Before the Georgie Jessup Band ended they opened for many top
acts including NRBQ and Delbert McClinton. Two songs from a live
recording, (Until I Dance and I'm A Werewolf), were selected for
the soundtrack of the movie On TheBlock, produced and directed
by Baltimore film maker Steve Yeager. When Winkte, (pronounced
win-tay), & Crazy Sacred Dogs were formed the self titled
CD was recorded. The Dogs', as they were fondly called, opened
for Native American activist, poet, actor, and songwriter, John
Trudell at the Baltimore showcase club, Max's on Broadway and
won the respect of his fans. Post Op Freeway, from their self-titled
album, was selected for the Women N Rock compilation, For Her.
The CD cover art even featured an old picture of Georgie's grandmother.
Georgie and the band were invited by the Morning Star Foundation
to perform at the 1992 anti Columbus day celebration, Native Voices
500 Years After in front of the Capital in Washington DC. Inspired
by a chance meeting with the Lakota holy man Frank Fools Crow
and a life long interest in the plight and struggle of all indigenous
people, ten songs were selected to form the concept album American
Holocaust. The recording addresses the genocide that was aimed
at Native Americans. The demand for American Holocaust lead to
Georgie performing at various powwows and Native American gatherings
in the Mid-Atlantic region. Sharing the stage in other venues
with such diverse acts as Cherokee Rose, Bill Kirchen & Too
Much Fun, Ron Halloway, disappear fear, Billy Kemp, Aleta Greene,
and A.I.M. activist, actor and performer, Dennis Banks, exposed
this important album to a wide receptive audience.
Performing in a duo with long time friend and mandolin player,
David Salyers, Sweet Grass Smoke was recorded and continues to
sell at Georgie's shows. One of the songs from this CD, (We Are
Related), was selected for the Baltimore Songwriters Association,
(BSA), compilation CD, From The Circle. Two recent WAMMIE, (Washington
Area Music Association / WAMA), nominations,(2000 and 2001) have
continued ad to the long list of credits over the years. Georgie
is currently in the studio recording another CD project with singer
songwriter, guitarist, Billy Kemp engineering and sharing the
production credits.
