Blaze & Max |

My name is Max. Well, now
it’s Max Pecosa Mauler. My Grandmom calls
me "freckle face" so my person, Georgie, gave me
the name Pecosa. Georgie’s good friend Snow
Owl has a wife named Pecosa. She got her name
from Snow’s ‘grandfather’ an
Abenaki tribal elder. The Abenaki are a
Northeastern American Indian tribe. Good thing
for me too, because there were rumors going
around the pound, where Georgie found me, about
how Native Americans sometimes ate dog! I spent a
few days with Mr. Snow Owl and my Aunt Pecosa
recently, and I got to tell you, I was a little
nervous until Georgie explained that Snow Owl was
not Lakota so I didn’t have to worry,
(grin).
Anyway, Mauler is
my adopted grandfather’s last name. I call
my new grandparents Mom and Pop because they are
Georgie’s parents. Every week day morning
before Georgie goes to this thing humans call
work, I go to Mom and Pops’ place until
Georgie comes to get me after work. I spend my
day hanging out with Mom while she prepares
dinners during the day. It is amazing how much
good food she happens to drop. Sometimes I help
Pop with his various projects he gets himself
involved with. Sometimes I ride with Mom and Pop
to my great aunt Virginia’s house to take
her groceries and supplies. She is Pop’s
older sister and can’t get things for
herself. Other times Pop and I just go to get the
mail. Pop has told me never to go past a certain
point in his driveway. I know it is for my own
good because Pop says cars run up and down the
road and could hit me if I went past his
driveway. I listen real good and stay where he
tells me too. One day I ran across the field back
to Georgie’s house where I live and Pop got
very angry with me but Mom explained that they
were just worried about me and did not know where
I went. I haven’t done that since. When we
eat lunch I always wind up with some special
treat. The other day I had a whole chicken breast
and another day a whole hamburger; the kind the
butcher makes fresh. If I ever think they
don’t know I’m there, I give them a
look with my big brown eyes and cute looks I have
developed, and I always come away with something
nice. Good thing I used my time in the pound
wisely. They could never resist my special looks
and I found myself having the run of the
place.
When I spend the
night at Mom and Pop’s they let me sleep
between them on their king -size bed. Of course,
I do the same with Georgie and my other human,
Angie. Angie is my new stepbrother’s,
(Boo), mom. You can see pictures of Boo, Georgie,
and me on my photo page. Angie is always saying I
am a ‘big baby’ because I like to be
close to her and Georgie and I get a little
jealous of Boo, but I was in the Anne Arundel
County Animal Control lock up for almost fourteen
months. I am so happy in my new home and
sometimes I get worried. I guess I can’t
believe I am here in my new home for
good!
In October 2000 I
was living with my prior human family. I was
homeless and jumped into a man’s truck at a
7-eleven store and his family took me in. At
first it was better than being on the street, but
one day their little girl startled me and I
reacted by snapping at her. This is what we did
on the street when we felt threatened, so when I
got scared I snapped. Apparently I scratched her
and gave her a puncture wound. I sure
didn’t mean too. I was only eight months
old at the time and still pretty scared of
people, especially little people.
I don’t
remember too much after that. A lady by the name
of Suzanne Andreas found me crawling from a
wooded area near my family’s home. She took
me to Dr. Patrick Holden of the Severn Square
Veterinary Hospital and he saved my life! They
say I had a seven inch by four inch gash in my
neck that missed my jugular vain by a centimeter.
I had been stabbed five times in the head with a
box-cutting knife. The man had also tried to
break my neck. It took four hours of surgery for
Dr. Holden to save me. I heard them say it was a
miracle that I was still alive.
Once I was able to
leave the hospital I was taken to the Anne
Arundel County Animal Control facility in
Millersville, MD. The director, Ms Tahira S.
Thomas decided it wasn’t clear whether I
was provoked or not when I snapped. This was
lucky for me because it meant I didn’t have
to be destroyed. God bless Ms Thomas because I
really didn’t mean to cause any
harm.
I wound up staying
at Animal Control for almost fourteen months
before I came to live with Georgie. I got to be
very close with everyone at Millersville but
still the nights were lonely and it's pretty
boring being in a cage all day long. Lots of
times the staff took me out of my cage and it got
so I had the run of the place. It was my natural
charm and good looks they couldn’t resist,
(grin). Seriously though, I made some real
friends who got me through some lonely
times.
The first time I
met Georgie was in November of 2000 and we hit it
off right away. Over the next fourteen months
Georgie would come visit and bring family and
friends to meet me. There were always some treats
dropped my way and I know the other dogs always
made out on those visits too. Sometimes my new
Grandmom and Grandpop would could to see me on
their own. This really made me feel
special!
I know I am very
gald to have found a real loving and caring
family! Now Georgie wants to tell you about how
we came to know each other.
Thank you for the
intro and background information Max! You are a
good boy! Well my part of this story begins with
a visit I made to see the brand new Animal
Control facility in Millersville back in November
of 2000. We had lost our family dog, Buckwheat,
back in 1996 and I felt it was time to start
looking again. I was hoping to find a puppy to
raise. I saw some puppies but none that I felt a
connection with. I did meet Max for the first
time though. We connected right away and I was
all set to bring him home when I read his
information card on the pen he was in. It said
Mixed English Setter and that he was male and
gave his other vital facts. The disappointing
fact was that he was under protective custody. I
went to the front desk and they confirmed that he
would not be going up for adoption.
In January of 2001
I had a dream about another family dog, Petie,
who was with me briefly in the early
1980’s. Petie was very special to me and
still comes to me in dream- time after all these
years. IN this dream he was being returned to me.
Anyway, after the dream, I knew I had to go back
to the shelter. I was sure a new puppy waited
there for me. To my surprise there were no
puppies and I didn’t see any stray I was
interested in until I saw Max again. This time I
went to the front desk to inquire more deeply
into his story. I finally learned, by looking up
old stories on the Internet, what had happen back
in October of 2000 with his former family. I
managed to get my name on a list of more than
fifteen people who were also hoping to adopt Max
once his case was resolved. I don’t think
any of us on that list ever expected it to take
fourteen months before Max would go up for
adoption. The trial was postponed several times
and when a judge finally ruled on the case in
July of 2001, the defendant appealed for a trial
by jury. This trial was cancelled at least once
that I know of. Sometime in November of 2001, a
jury heard the case and the man was once again
found guilty. I inquired about Max again but I
was told there were now six people ahead of me.
Months before, I had stopped thinking about my
own desires and put it in Creator’s hands.
I only wanted Max to be with a good home. I
didn’t care if it was with me or with
someone else as long as he would finally have a
real home.
As it turned out,
on December 14th I got a call from Ms
Thomas at Animal Control and she said I could
come pick up Max if I still wanted him! Everyone
had told be I should just give up on getting Max.
Several people had offered me dogs and cats along
the way but I turned them down. I knew if I did
get Max that he would need a lot of love and
attention. I was very tempted to take a few of
those dogs and cats along the way but I’m
glad I didn’t commit myself. I just
didn’t have the means to adopt more than
one animal at that time.
Anyway, for Max
and especially for me, there was a Christmas
miracle! On December 15th I picked up
my new friend and Max came home with
me…finally!
Max and I would
like to sincerely thank everyone at Animal
Control, Ms Andreas, who found Max, Dr. Holden
and his staff who saved him, and the Judge for
seeing to it that justice was served. Anyone who
may want to inquire about Max or visit Max should
feel free to contact me. My address, phone and
e-mail address can be found on the contact page
